CPAN Practice Questions 👑
The CPAN exam is not about memorizing drugs. It is about knowing what you assess first and why. These questions are written the way the real ones read.
What the CPAN exam actually covers
The CPAN credential from ABPANC certifies competence in phase I post-anesthesia care. The exam is multiple choice and weighted across four domains. Study to the blueprint, not to a textbook table of contents.
| Domain | What it tests |
|---|---|
| Physiologic | Airway, cardiovascular, neuro, thermoregulation, fluid and electrolytes, pain and comfort |
| Behavioral and cognitive | Emergence delirium, anxiety, patient and family education, cultural needs |
| Advocacy | Patient safety, informed consent, ethical issues, transfer of care |
| Professional practice | Standards, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, staffing and competency |
Sample CPAN practice questions
- 1. A patient arrives in PACU with stridor and falling SpO2 despite 100% oxygen by mask. The first action is: apply positive pressure and call anesthesia immediately — this is laryngospasm until proven otherwise. Suctioning first wastes the window.
- 2. A post-op patient shivers with a temperature of 35.2°C. The priority is active forced-air warming, because shivering raises oxygen consumption up to 400% and can trigger myocardial ischemia in an at-risk patient.
- 3. A patient who received a spinal cannot move their legs 90 minutes after arrival. The correct response is to document the block level and continue monitoring the regression — this is expected, not an emergency, unless the level is ascending.
- 4. A patient with OSA who received hydromorphone is arousable only to sternal rub, RR 7. The priority is stimulation and airway support with naloxone prepared — reversal is indicated, but airway comes first.
- 5. Which patient is the priority: a stable post-op knee with pain 8/10, or a lap chole with a heart rate that rose from 78 to 122 and a soft blood pressure? The tachycardic patient — that is occult bleeding until proven otherwise.
Eligibility and exam logistics
- You need a current unrestricted RN license.
- ABPANC requires 1,800 hours of direct perianesthesia clinical experience in the two years before you apply.
- CPAN covers phase I recovery; CAPA covers preanesthesia and phase II. Some nurses hold both.
- The exam is computer-based at a testing center with a defined number of scored multiple-choice items plus unscored pretest items.
- Certification is valid for three years and is renewed through continuing education or re-examination.
A study plan that works
Nurses who pass first attempt tend to do the same three things: they study the blueprint domains proportionally instead of over-studying pharmacology, they work practice questions daily and read every rationale — including the ones they got right — and they drill priority-setting questions specifically, because the CPAN exam is heavy on 'which patient do you see first.' Six to eight weeks of 30 minutes a day beats two weeks of panic.
Frequently asked
How hard is the CPAN exam?
It is a competence exam, not a trick exam. Nurses who struggle usually memorized facts instead of practicing prioritization. If you can consistently answer 'which patient do you assess first and why,' you are in good shape.
How many questions are on the CPAN exam?
The exam is a computer-based multiple-choice test administered by ABPANC, containing scored items across four domains plus a set of unscored pretest questions. Check ABPANC's current candidate handbook for the exact count for your testing window.
What is the difference between CPAN and CAPA?
CPAN certifies phase I post-anesthesia care — the immediate recovery period. CAPA certifies preanesthesia and phase II care. Nurses who work across the full perianesthesia continuum sometimes hold both credentials.
How long should I study for the CPAN exam?
Most nurses do well with six to eight weeks at about 30 minutes a day of practice questions with rationales, weighted toward the physiologic domain and priority-setting scenarios.
Are these CPAN practice questions free?
Yes. The sample questions here and the free CPAN quiz are free. The full CPAN test bank with adaptive mock exams, domain scoring, and score history is part of the Baddie RN membership.
