The New Grad Nurse Resume That Gets Interviews ๐Ÿ‘‘

You have no RN experience yet. That is fine. Recruiters are not looking for experience on a new grad resume, they are looking for proof you can be trusted with patients on day one. Here is exactly how to show it.

One page. This exact order.

Nurse recruiters spend well under a minute on a first pass. Anything that makes them hunt costs you the interview. Keep it to one page until you have two years of RN experience.

  • Header โ€” name, credentials in legal order (BSN, RN), city and state, phone, professional email, LinkedIn.
  • Licenses and certifications โ€” RN license number and state, compact status, BLS, ACLS, PALS with expiration dates.
  • Summary โ€” two lines, written for the specific unit you are applying to. No objective statements.
  • Clinical rotations โ€” this is your experience section. Unit type, hospital, hours, and what you actually did.
  • Education โ€” school, degree, graduation date, GPA only if 3.5 or higher, honors.
  • Work history โ€” yes, include the serving and retail jobs. They prove reliability and people skills.
  • Skills and affiliations โ€” EHR systems by name, SNA or student nurse leadership, languages spoken.

Credentials go in the right order or it looks sloppy

The ANA order is degree, licensure, state requirements, national certifications, then awards. A recruiter who reviews nursing resumes daily notices when it is backwards.

Turn clinical rotations into real bullets

Never write 'observed' or 'shadowed'. Every bullet is action verb, what you did, patient population, and a number wherever a number exists. Numbers are what make a new grad resume feel experienced.

  • Weak: Assisted nurses with patient care on a med-surg floor.
  • Strong: Provided direct care for a 4-patient med-surg assignment under preceptor supervision across 180 clinical hours, including assessments, medication administration, and Epic documentation.
  • Weak: Learned about post-op patients in PACU.
  • Strong: Completed 90 hours in a 12-bay PACU performing phase I airway and hemodynamic assessments, Aldrete scoring, and handoff report to inpatient units.
  • Weak: Helped with wound care.
  • Strong: Performed sterile dressing changes and drain care for post-surgical patients, escalating two suspected surgical site infections to the charge nurse.

Beat the ATS before a human ever sees it

Hospital systems screen resumes automatically before a recruiter opens one. The fix is boring and mechanical, and most new grads skip it.

  • Copy the exact phrasing from the job posting. If it says 'telemetry monitoring', do not write 'cardiac monitoring'.
  • Submit as a PDF unless the posting specifically asks for .doc.
  • No columns, tables, text boxes, headshots, or graphics. Parsers drop everything inside them.
  • Spell out the term and then the acronym once: 'Basic Life Support (BLS)'.
  • Name your file FirstName-LastName-RN-Resume.pdf.
  • Standard headings only: Experience, Education, Licenses and Certifications, Skills.

The mistakes that get new grad resumes cut

  • Two pages with no RN experience to fill them.
  • A generic summary sent to every hospital in the city.
  • Listing an expired BLS card, or leaving expiration dates off entirely.
  • An email address you made in high school.
  • Claiming skills you cannot perform unsupervised โ€” recruiters ask about them in the interview.
  • No license number when the posting requires one for the application to be considered.

Frequently asked

What should a new grad nurse resume include with no experience?

Your clinical rotations are your experience. List each rotation as a job entry with the unit type, facility, total hours, and action-verb bullets describing the care you delivered. Add licenses, certifications with expiration dates, education, prior non-nursing work that shows reliability, and named EHR systems.

How long should a new grad nurse resume be?

One page. Recruiters reviewing new grad residency applications expect one page, and a second page with no RN experience reads as filler.

Should I put my GPA on a nursing resume?

Only if it is 3.5 or higher, and only for your first year out of school. Otherwise use the space for clinical hours and certifications.

How do I write a nurse resume if I have not passed the NCLEX yet?

List your credentials as 'BSN, RN (pending NCLEX)' with your scheduled test date, or 'Graduate Nurse' if your state uses that title. Many new grad residencies hire before licensure, so apply anyway rather than waiting.

Do nursing resumes go through an ATS?

Almost every hospital system uses one. Mirror the job posting's exact wording, submit a single-column PDF with standard section headings, and avoid tables, graphics, and text boxes so the parser can read every line.
