Chapter 1Welcome to PACU.Nobody expects perfect.
Built by nurses who refuse to gatekeep. Helping new nurses become confident, competent, and compassionate β one shift at a time.
Nobody expects you to know everything.
But they do expect you to think.
That's what we're going to teach.
Not memorization. Thinking.
School taught you how to pass NCLEX.
PACU teaches you how to save lives.
Different game. Different rules. Same you β just leveled up.
Expectation: "I'll have time to chart."
Reality: Anesthesia just rolled in another patient. And another. And your pyxis is glitching.
Welcome. It's fine. You're fine. We got you.
Before you touch the computerβ¦
Look at your patient.
Skin color. Chest rise. Sat monitor. Airway. Then chart.
The patient always comes before the chart. Period.
Not:
β How fast you chart.
β Whether you know every drip off the top of your head.
β How polished your report sounds.
They're watching:
β
Do you notice the airway?
β
Did you reassess?
β
Did you call for help early β instead of trying to hero it?
Situational awareness beats memorization every single shift.
Not just "what to do."
WHY it matters.
Because when you understand the WHY, you stop being scared of the "what if." You start seeing patterns. You start thinking like a nurse instead of a checklist.
That's Baddie Brain.
Good.
Nervous nurses double-check.
Overconfident nurses miss things.
The nurses I trust the most? Still get a little pit in their stomach before a bad case. That pit keeps their patient safe.
You're not alone.
Every experienced nurse you look up to has cried in the car, in the bathroom, in the med room, in the parking garage.
Feeling it deeply is not weakness. It's the reason you're going to be great at this.
Go find one thing you don't understand.
Ask about it. Look it up. Ask your preceptor for the WHY.
Learn. Grow.
That's what Baddies do. One thing a shift. It compounds.
This is Chapter 1 of 10.
